The Story of the Route 66 Gasconade River Bridge
The Gasconade River Bridge: An Architectural Jewel on Route 66
A Pause in History: The Bridge's Closure
An Unexpected Turn
In December 2014, Route 66 enthusiasts faced a significant loss when the Gasconade River Bridge was closed for safety reasons. The closure, invoked by MODOT, was a response to concerns over its structural integrity, marking an end to its continuous use since the 1920s. This event sparked a community-led effort to save and preserve this piece of American history. Roamin Rich started the effort and eventually an official organization was formed called the Gasconade Guardians.
