Applying is easy. You must be a Missouri resident with a vehicle titled in Missouri. Youāll need your VIN number from your vehicle, the existing plate number if your vehicle already has plates, a credit card or ACH for payment. You follow the prompts on our website and fill out the forms one step at a time. It takes about 10-15 minutes if you already have the info listed above readily available. We will submit the information to the Missouri DOR in Jefferson City on your behalf. The plates will be sent to your local DOR license office of your choosing on the application form. If your vehicle currently has plates, you will be required to surrender those plates to your local license office in exchange for your new black Route 66 license plates.

Youāll be required to list your vehicle along with its VIN number, your name, your address, your desired plate number (personalized). Youāll also choose which license office you want the plate sent to. A link is made available on the application form that will provide you lists of the license offices in your area.

The Route 66 Association of Missouri is proud to be the only black license plate available from the Missouri DOR. It is only available in black.

The plate will be shipped from Jefferson City to your local license office of your choosing. If your vehicle currently has plates, you will be required to surrender those plates in exchange for your Route 66 black license plates.

No. The specialty plate division of the DOR will work as quickly as possible to process your application. Plates are typically delivered within 4-6 weeks of accepted applications.

You will receive notice from the state of Missouri DOR office just as you normally would for registration renewal. You will be required to return to our website to complete an additional Emblem Usage Authorization for to accompany your renewal as required by the DOR.

An EUA (Emblem Usage Authorization) is a license to display an emblem on state issued license plate. In this case, you will be displaying the Missouri Route 66 emblem and all proceeds benefit the Route 66 Association of Missouri. The license is good for one or two years ($35.00 per year). The form is part of the application to get the new plate.

The plate is renewed on schedule as any other plate offered by the DOR. All specialty plates including the black Route 66 license plate are renewed in July. Annual and biannual registrations are available depending on whether or not your vehicle is an odd or even year manufactured vehicle and whether or not that vehicle is being registered in an odd or even calendar year.

There are no refunds on the EUA. The state may offer a refund on their portion of the plate, but we do not know their policy on the matter.

Prior to the start of 2024 there is a small waiting list for the black Route 66 license plate because the plate has yet to go into production. Upon the first 200 applications for the black Route 66 plate reaching Jefferson City, the license plate will go into production as any other specialty plate offered by the Missouri DOR. Applications after the start of 2024 will be batched in groups to the DOR office in Jefferson City, usually once a week from the Route 66 Association of Missouri.

Yes, as part of filling out DOR for 1716 here on the Route 66 Association of Missouri website, you will transfer your existing personalized plate number to the new black Route 66 license plate. You may also decide to change your plate number if you do not want to continue with the existing plate number. NOTE: if you have a non-personalized plate you must choose a personalized plate name or number.

Yes, you are given 6 available plate numbers of your choosing. The DOR will determine if they are appropriate and if available, your first choices will be entered on to your new black Route 66 license plate. You will forfeit your old plate number.

All specialty and personalized plates offered by the Missouri DOR expire in July. If your vehicle is currently registered and expires in a month other than July, your registration fees already paid will be prorated and applied to your black Route 66 plate. All future renewals will take place in July.
